Combine seasonal berries with star-shaped bananas to make this tasty, festive red, white, and blue patriotic fruit salad treat. It’s an easy, light dessert for your next Memorial Day or 4th of July celebration.
Does everybody have big plans for this weekend? We’re taking it easy and sticking close to home this Memorial Day weekend. Maybe we’ll hit the pool? Fire up the grill? Head to a local u-pick strawberry farm and do some berry picking? It all sounds good to me! We have a few strawberry farms near us, and it is definitely picking season here.
If you can get your hands on some good berries, you’ll definitely want to make this festive, red-white-and-blue fruit salad. It’s super-fun for patriotic holidays, especially with the star-shaped bananas. But you can really make this any time you have a bunch of berries on hand.
Friends, I have to tell you, I was determined to make this salad. I first saw the recipe from Simply Recipes, and bookmarked it for later. But, I knew that I had to have star-shaped bananas to really make this perfect for a patriotic gathering.
Here’s my tip for you: If you are also determined to have banana stars in your berry salad, make sure you give your star cutters a test run before the day of your event.
My first attempt was a no-go because all of my cutters were just a SMIDGE too big! And, I really thought I had picked out some really good, fat bananas. No good. So now, I have good news and bad news.
The good news: I did finally find the perfect set of star shaped cutters that are perfectly sized for cutting banana slices.
The bad news: I can’t link to them because I literally CAN NOT find them online anywhere!
I can, however, tell you that I found the set at Michaels, and they are a double-sided set of 6 star cut-outs. I really hope you can find them if you end up needing them.
Making Your Berry and Banana Patriotic Fruit Salad
The berry salad is super easy to make, and I do have a recipe you can view at the bottom of this post.
In a nutshell, cut your strawberries however you like to eat them. Some like smaller chunks, some people like to see the beautiful strawberry shape and don’t like them cut up too much (raises hand!).
You’ll need some lemons to add a little juice and zest.
And, feel free to include all kinds of berries. I kept it simple with just strawberries and blueberries, but later in the summer I’ll probably make this again with blackberries and whatever else is in season.
Easy Red White and Blue Berry Dessert
The berry salad is really good on it’s own. But, you can also turn this patriotic fruit salad into a simple dessert that is so light and delicious you’ll want to go back for more.
Grab (or make your own) a Pound Cake or Angel Food Cake, and cut it into cubes. I’m prefer the lightness of the Angel Food Cake, so that’s what I used. You’ll also need some whipped cream. Again, make your own, or pick up a can of Reddi-Whip.
Now, add some whipped cream to the bottom of your dessert cup, then fill the cup about 3/4 way with the cubes of cake. Now add another layer of whipped cream, and top with your berry and banana fruit salad.
There you have it!
Two fabulous ways to enjoy this delicious summer treat.
Here is the recipe:
- 2 cups strawberries, hulled and halved
- 1 cup blueberries
- 2-3 large bananas
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp honey
- 1/2 tsp lemon zest
- Add prepared berries to a large bowl
- Thickly slice your bananas and cut into star shapes
- Gently add banana slices to bowl with berries
- Add lemon juice and gently toss to coat (important for keeping bananas from turning brown)
- Add honey and lemon zest, gently toss again
This is best served immediately, but can be kept covered in a refrigerator for up to 2 hours prior to serving if needed.
